About Classic Slide Puzzle

Most slide puzzles let you move any tile into the empty slot at any time, but Classic Slide Puzzle layers on an extra rule: the empty space never moves—only tiles directly adjacent to it can slide. This single constraint turns the sorting task into a constrained routing problem where every shift must be planned backward. The goal remains standard—order numbers from smallest to biggest—but the path to reach it now tighter, rewarding setups over random sliding.

A classic sliding puzzle where you sort numbers from smallest to biggest. Just slide the tiles around and try to put everything in the right order as fast as you can. It’s simple but super satisfying when it all clicks into place. Use your mouse or tap the screen to play!

How to Play Classic Slide Puzzle

  1. Select a tile adjacent to the empty space by clicking or tapping it.
  2. The chosen tile slides into the empty space, leaving its own cell vacant.
  3. Repeat this shuffling process across the 4x4 grid of 16 squares.
  4. Arrange the numbered tiles in ascending order from 1 through 15.
  5. Leave the final cell (bottom-right, by default) empty to match the solved arrangement.

Tips & Strategies

  • Work on solving one row or column at a time rather than moving single tiles aimlessly.
  • When nearing the final position, map out two or three slides in advance to avoid boxing yourself out.
  • Keep the empty space near tiles you intend to move next to minimise wasted shuffles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can any tile on the board be slid into the empty square at a certain time?

Only tiles immediately above, below, left, or right of the empty square can slide into it. Tiles farther away must be repositioned first to become adjacent.

What happens if I slide a tile into the empty space it just came from?

That move counts normally—you can undo the previous slide by pushing the same tile back. The sequence tracker counts it as a move, so it may affect any time-based record.

Do the spaces have to be exactly in the order at the end for it to count as solved?

Yes. The puzzle is solved when numbers 1 through 15 read left to right, top to bottom, starting from the top-left, with the empty cell in the bottom-right.

Is there a penalty for taking many moves or a long time to finish?

No. The game tracks your move count and time, but they are shown only as metrics. You can take as many moves and as long as needed to solve the puzzle.
